Miitomo Review [Mobile]

miitomo_iconWho would have thought that the first piece of software from Nintendo to make it on to a mobile platform outside of their own hardware would be a Mii based social network app. But that’s what we got. Miitomo is a social network where we can learn about our friends through questions and answers and they can learn about us.

Miitomo centers around your Mii, which a representation of you. You interact with your Mii virtually by dressing them up and answering questions they’ve asked. It’s through these questions and the answers you given that your friends will start learning more about you. As read through some of your friends’ questions an answers, you can choose to “heart” them and can even shoot back a little comment in response to their answers. It’s a nice little touch that can further the conversation.

Miitomo is all about questions an answers though. It’s also about showing off your personal style and what better way to do that than to dress up your Mii. Almost everything you do in the game will yield Miitomo Coins and with those coins you can buy clothing items in the Miitomo shop. There are tons of items available and even some items that are only available on that day. You’ll want to check it out if you want to personalize your Mii. Miitomo also has mini games called Miitomo Drop. Basically all you do is drop Miis in hopes of them landing on an item you want. These items are usually only available in these mini games.

Since Miitomo is a new app, there are a few areas it can see improvement. First off, you can only add friends via Facebook, Twitter, or locally. The QR Code function that everyone’s been posting doesn’t actually make you friends. If you scan those codes, it just makes a copy of their Mii and adds them to your app. You still aren’t friends. Secondly, Miitomo is a battery killer. If you use this app a lot throughout the day, you’ll have to recharge somewhere because it will eat through your battery.

Overall, Miitomo is a rather interesting social media app. Instead of directly chatting with your friends, you learn about them through questions and answers and they learn about you. These aren’t even common questions either you’d usually ask someone, so you get to learn about weird stuff like what kind of bread they like or what was the funniest thing they’ve experienced lately. You really get to know some of these people in ways you wouldn’t have imagined.
