Shantae: Half-Genie Hero | 30 Minutes of Gameplay and Impressions | PS4

shantae

The latest game I’m checking out comes from indie developer Wayforward and publisher XSEED Games. It’s called Shantae: Half-Genie Hero and is the fourth game in the Shantae series. This is actually my first experience with the Shantae universe having never played any of the previous ones but it looked interesting enough to warrant a play.

Shantae is a spirited young half-genie from the magical world of Sequin Land where she must once again defend Scuttle Town as the pirate captain and self-proclaimed Queen of the Seven Seas, Risky Boots, plots to steal a newly discovered limitless source of power.

I’ll start this off by saying that this is no where near a full review. I don’t think I’ve played enough of the game for that, but what I have played so far has lots of promise. Off the bat I am already really impressed with how the game looks and presents itself. The world is vibrant and colorful and the characters also seem full of life. The main character, Shantae is quite bubbly and seems to have quite and interesting skill set. Jumping and attacking are just basic moves but towards the end of this playthrough I was given the power to transform into a monkey that can scale walls which is pretty cool so I’m eager to see what else I can do.

Gameplay wise, it’s so far a pretty solid platforming game. It’s not really that hard for now and no part of it was really that frustrating, which is good.

Aside from that, I also really like the music in the game and the art and animations in the game are really well done. I’m looking forward to playing more of Shantae: Half-Genie Hero.
