Loot Rascals – Gameplay and Impressions | PS4

Loot Rascals is a roguelike strategy experience with collectible card game elements and a retro sci-fi aesthetic. The objective of Loot Rascals is to escape from a distant hostile planet, but eccentric aliens, robots and monsters stand in the way. A.I. controlled holograms of other players may also attack, depending upon in-game decisions.

This game is hard, at least it is when you first start playing it. There is a tutorial that I don’t have up here but it’s highly recommended that you play through it. It’ll teach you how to move around the play area, night and day shifts, how to collect and use cards, and special abilities. It doesn’t seem to complex at first, but there’s actually a lot of strategy and planning involved which makes Loot Rascals a very deep game.

I’ve played through the game numerous times so far and I’ve died nearly every time on the first area without ever finding the warp to the next area. That is until this playthrough that I recorded. This was one of my few times where I’ve made it to the next area. The secret is keeping an eye on when day and night comes and which enemies will allow you to hit first. Not only that, the cards you collect are very important as well as the way you have them placed. This can mean the difference between several points in both your ATK and DEF stats.

Of course just making it the second area doesn’t mean diddly because now, I can’t make it to the third area. And because this game features permadeath, I get sent back to the first area when I die. I’m starting to get the hang of Loot Rascals though so hopefully I can figure out a way to get farther in the game. Oh well. At least the game has been pretty fun so far so I don’t really mind.
