When it comes to backpacks, I’m a huge fan. Pretty much anywhere I go, if I have to carry more than 1 item in my pocket, I’m carrying a backpack. Obviously that means I carry a backpack around a lot, like daily to work and also on any extended trips. I have a huge collection of backpacks now, but I’m always looking out for the next favorite. The latest one I’ve had the pleasure of checking out comes from Solo NY an it’s the Solo Draft. It actually comes in two flavors and I’ve been able to check them both out, the Solo Draft and Draft Slim.

Design

In terms of looks, there really isn’t too much difference between these two backpacks which is why I’m throwing both of them into one review. What differences they do have are subtle and mainly cosmetic, so I’ll mention them as we go.

Let’s start with the outside appearance of the Solo Draft. This is a very attractive and thinly profiled backpack. I’m of the mindset that I really dislike backpacks that look big and bulky with a really wide side profile. I want my backpacks to be sleek and sexy, but still have enough space to carry everything I need on any given day. The Solo Draft I think does a very good job of doing that.

The material on the outside seems to be different depending on the color you get. On the black Draft, it’s a smooth nylon material while on the back pocket area, it has a more textured appearance. On the grey Draft Slim, it’s a bit different. It has more of a canvas like feel to it that extends to the back pockets and shoulder straps. Speaking of which, another difference between the regular Draft and the Draft Slim is that the Slim does not have the chest strap. As stated before, there is a decently sized zippered pocket near the bottom. It’s large enough where I can store my laptop’s battery charger and a full sized mouse. There’s also one more zippered pocket up top that’s pretty slim and best used to hold your phone, wallet, or anything else you need quick access too.

Moving on to the back of the backpack, there is a good amount of padding that is covered in some type of material that looks very breathable. I’ve seen this on other backpacks and it’s suppose to help keep your back from sweating. The regular Draft also has this extra strap attached in which I don’t really know what the purpose of it is. The Draft Slim doesn’t have this.

Rounding out the rest of the exterior are two side pockets you’ll mostly use for bottles of water and a hand strap on top.

Now to the interior of the backpack, there’s only 1 large compartment, but it’s got organizational pockets for different items. There’s a dedicated laptop sleeve that can fit laptops up to 15-inches. The Draft has a strap for this to keep it in place while the Draft Slim does not. There’s also another sleeve just outside this for something like a tablet or a book so it’s not just sitting loose in your bag. On the opposite side, there are little pockets for pens, notepad, wallet, etc. There’s even another extra pocket with a zipper if you want to secure anything there.

The rest of the compartment is large enough to hold larger items like headphones, your jacket, a dictionary, etc. Pretty much whatever and the good thing about it that even when it’s all stuffed up, it still has a very thin profile.

Final Thoughts

I really dig the Solo Draft and Draft Slim. I like the fact that I can carry everything I need in it. On any given day, I can carry my 13″ laptop, a mouse, charging cables, full sized headphones, and spare phone, pens, and my tablet. Even with all that, there’s still room for a jacket and any miscellaneous items.

Now there’s really not much difference between the Solo Draft and Draft Slim and I believe that you get either one or the other depending on what color you choose. Both seem to have the same amount of storage capacity, but the regular Draft seems to have a couple extra straps and what not. Either way, it’s a fantastic backpack that not only functions well, but looks good doing it.
