Is Google Daydream VR Dead?

Google Daydream

Last year, I picked up a Google Daydream headset thanks in part to the LG V30 promotion that got you one for free when purchasing the phone. At the time, it was one of the best mobile VR solutions I had tried thanks in part to the Daydream controller that seemed very accurate and responsive. The demos I had tried were rather fun and being able to watch movies and videos in a “private” theater was super neat.

Fast forward to today, and I haven’t used the Google Daydream in months. Part of this is due to the lack of new quality software (mainly games), and the other part is due to the fact that it just doesn’t work anymore. For some reason, my controller no longer pairs with my phone which makes the entire setup useless without it. If you take a look at the reviews for the Daydream app, you’ll see that there are a ton of folks with the same problem. Even though there was an update as recently as November, the issues persist. I’ve tried everything from reinstalling the app to reinstalling VR services and nothing works. So for now, it’s just a really fancy paper weight at the moment.

You would figure that if Google was really serious about this, there wouldn’t be this issue to begin with, but it doesn’t seem like they are. There are only still a select few phones that work with Daydream with many newer phones still out of the loop. For instance, my LG V40 does not work with Daydream even though the LG V30 does.

With that said, how many of you out there feel the same way? Is Google Daydream dead? Honestly it was really neat at the beginning and I would honestly love to keep using it but the lack of quality content really kills it not to mention the fact that it’s just not working for me right now. Anyways, let me know in the comments below about your experiences with Google Daydream and how you feel about it.
