If you’re looking for change of pace from all the shooters on the market right now, you might want to give indie developer Henchman & Goon’s latest, Pode a try. Pode is a co-op puzzle exploration game about two unlikely travel companions, a rock Bulder and a fallen star Glo, going on a beautiful adventure within a mysterious and magical mountain. Through unique individual talents the duo revitalize the environment around them by working together to solve mind-bending puzzles.
The first thing you’ll really notice about Pode is the gorgeous art. This is one really good looking game. Everything just looks so polished, whimsical, and fantastic. Something about the art style and colors really bring the whole thing together and hits you on an emotional level. To me, it’s just a really beautiful game and a real joy to look at.
The same goes for the audio. The soundtrack is just so good that it draws you into the game. It has a very relaxing feel that doesn’t detract from the gameplay. The developers make a big deal about it being composed by world-renowned composer Austin Wintory, but I have no idea who he is. (Apparently he also composed for the games Flow and Journey). I just know that I like it.
Next up is the gameplay and let me just say, Pode’s gameplay is very good. What I think is really neat about it is that you play the game entirely solo or with a friend. Pode is basically an environmental puzzle game. Playing as both Bulder and Glo, both have different abilities that need to be utilized in order to solve each puzzle. If you’re playing solo, they make the switching of characters quite intuitive so you’ll never have to feel like you’re missing out on something if you aren’t playing with a friend. However, playing with a friend is a bit more fun and beneficial to the puzzle solving aspect of the game. By that I mean you just have another set of eyes there that can help solve some of the more difficult puzzles.
With that said, I suggest taking a look of the gameplay video above to see if Pode is for you or not. In my opinion though, Pode is very good, both in play and in looks. I don’t think anyone who plays Pode will be disappointed. It’s a really beautiful game with gorgeous visuals and solid gameplay. Let’s not forget too the amazing soundtrack that is the icing on the cake and what you have in Pode is a near perfect game that anyone and everyone should enjoy.
Received game from developer and/or publisher for coverage purposes.
