The Blackout Club – Prologue Mission Gameplay and Impressions | PS4

The Blackout Club

The Blackout Club is a new game created by Jordan Thomas and published by South Park Digital Studios. This is predominately a co-op survival game but what I’m looking at today is the single player Prologue which serves as a tutorial mission for new players.

In The Blackout Club your friend has gone missing and all mysterious activities happening within Redacre go unnoticed by the adults. At night, the boogeyman known as ‘The Angel’ haunts Redacre, using the hypnotized adults as spies to help it track down the club. Those committing sins are hunted by this entity, which is only visible when the player closes their eyes. Players must work together to help save their missing friend and uncover the truth about what is happening under the surface of this sleepy town.

Let’s start off by again saying that this is just the prologue to The Blackout Club. In it, you get a sense for what the story will be about as well as the mechanics of the game. In essence, a tutorial mission that isn’t boring like other tutorial missions. This one actually gets you hyped to play the game and lays out the overall feel and ambiance you’ll be experiencing.

I’d also like to state that I’m usually not a fan of horror games, especially if the are first person horror games. I’m a fan of horror movies but something about playing a game as opposed to just watching it, makes me feel uneasy. That wasn’t the case with The Blackout Club. While the game is creepy, it’s more atmospheric and less “jump scare” type scary. The prologue has an air of mystery to it and you want to continue playing just to see what will happen next.

Aside from that, the presentation itself is really good. Love graphics, love the eerie sounds and music, love the characters they’ve come up with in The Blackout Club. This is a game that feels like you need to play smartly where you’ll be engaged in the story and not one of those games where you just sit around and watch what’s happening with little input.

With all that said, I’m really intrigued to play the rest of The Blackout Club. I just need to find a co-op partner to continue on with the story.

Received game from developer and/or publisher for coverage purposes.
