My son has the regular Nintendo Switch and he likes to take it on our road trips and vacations. What he doesn’t like is having to lug around the giant Nintendo Switch Dock that is needed to output gameplay to a television. It’s a pain to carry around and it seems much larger than it really needs to be. I knew there had to be a much smaller solution out there that was much more portable and I think I found it with the VAKO 4-in-1 USB-C HUB. While not made specifically for the Nintendo Switch, it seems to work with it and can output video from it to a television.
My main goal was to find a reliable and affordable alternative to the official Nintendo Switch Dock as well as one that was much more portable. After a long search on Amazon, I came upon the VAKO 4-in-1 USB-C HUB. It stated that it would work for the Nintendo Switch, though there were not really any user reviews about it working on the Switch. I decided to take the chance on it because it was one of the most affordable ones I found at only $16. For some reason it’s cheaper if you buy the silver color instead of the lead gray color.
Upon receiving the VAKO 4-in-1 USB-C HUB, I was pleasantly relieved that it actually looks and feels pretty well made. It seems to be made from aluminum with plastic ends. The USB-C cable that extends out the rear seems very thick and sturdy while the USB-C plug itself seems to be also made of aluminum. Size wise, it’s not very large at all and fits in the palm of your hands. It has four ports built into it – USB Type C PD charging connector, an HDMI port, USB 3.0 port, and a VGA port. You will have to provide your own cables as this only comes with the main unit.
Since I am using this for the Nintendo Switch, I’ve heard it’s best to use the real Nintendo Switch charging plug, so that’s what I did with this and plugged that portion into the USB Type C PD charging connector. You’ll see the VAKO 4-in-1 USB-C HUB light up which means it’s powered up. Next plug the HDMI cable to your television and the HUB. Lastly, plug the USB-C connector into the Nintendo Switch. If all goes well, you’ll see the Nintendo Switch home screen on your television just as you would if you were using the official Nintendo Switch Dock.
This HUB also includes a USB 3.0 port so if you wanted to, you can use this to connect any wired controllers you might want to use. While there is only one port, it is possible to connect a USB hub to this to allow for more USB 3.0 ports.
So does the VAKO 4-in-1 USB-C HUB actually work for the Nintendo Switch? Short answer, yes. I hooked this up to my son’s Nintendo Switch and it fired right up. Not only does it show up on the television perfectly, it also charges at the same time. Like the real dock, you’ll need to disconnect the Joy-Cons from the main unit if you want to use them.
With that said, if you are looking for an inexpensive Nintendo Switch Dock alternative that is way more portable, consider the VAKO 4-in-1 USB-C HUB.
