The LG V60 ThinQ 5G is the newest smartphone out from LG and while it’s so far been a very good phone, there are several quirks with it that have me scratching my head. This is an AT&T version of the device so I’m not sure if these are issues with just these particular models or all of them in general. These are also observations that I’ve made in comparison to the older unlocked LG V50 ThinQ 5G with Android 10 installed with the latest updates.
1. Can’t Report Calls as Spam
I’m not sure what going on here but I can’t remember the last time where this wasn’t an option in the phone app. Basically you could look at your call history, pick a number and report it as spam to your carrier. This option is still available on my unlocked device but doesn’t show up as an option on this AT&T LG V60. There is only the option to block the number.
UPDATE 4/8/2020: This issue seems to be tied in with the AT&T Call Protect app. If you disable the AT&T Call Protect app, the “Report” button disappears from the phone app. Reinstalling the app adds the option back into the Phone app. Tapping it will then open the Call Protect app which will allow you to report a number for spam as general spam, robocaller, political call, etc.
2. Can’t Activate Wi-Fi Calling
For some reason, I can not activate Wi-Fi Calling on this phone, though it is an option in the settings. Turning it on tells me that it is maybe not activated on my account, though I’ve never had this issue before on other AT&T phones. I’ve had the same sim card for years now and I’ve had Wi-Fi calling on an older LG V30 and LG V20 that were also AT&T devices. I can’t call AT&T either to fix this issue as currently we’re experiencing heavy call volumes to AT&T support because of COVID-19 and I don’t want to clog up their support lines with something this trivial. I’ll have to wait until things settle down to figure this issue out.
UPDATE 4/8/2020: Wi-Fi calling is now working after being provisioned for it. Seems like it was just a small AT&T issue but it works now. Apparently if you swap phones a lot with the same SIM card, it can cause issues with certain features not being provisioned properly. It is important to enter the IMEI for your new device in the myAT&T app anytime a SIM is switched.
3. Sporadic 5 GHz Wi-Fi Issues
This is an issue that was occurring the first couple of days. When I would connect to a 5 GHz Wi-Fi connection on my router, it would work fine for a bit, but then all of a sudden drop the connection. When trying to reconnect, I noticed that all 5 GHz connections were gone from the Wi-Fi list and only 2.4 GHz connections were showing up. The only way to get 5 GHz connections to show up again was to restart the phone. This however doesn’t occur with the 2.4 GHz connections. I’ve decided to stick to the 2.4 GHz connection for now based on stability.
UPDATE 4/8/2020: This is a known issue and will be addressed in the next patch. Qualcomm says this affects a very small number of users.
4. Camera Gets Dark When Using AR Stickers
Not sure what’s going on here either but this didn’t happen on the LG V50. When swapping to the AR Stickers mode in the camera app, the screen gets dark and all photos you take are also really dark. This only happens with the AR Stickers mode. It doesn’t happen all the time, but it occurs at least 60-75% of the time.
UPDATE 4/8/2020: This seems to occur when lighting is less then optimal. In bright areas and outdoors, it doesn’t do this. More clarification on this later.
UPDATE 4/21/2020: Seems this issue will be resolved in an upcoming software update.
5. Some Apps Not Behaving As Intended
There seems to be some issues with certain apps on the LG V60 that I’m not having on my other test devices. For instance, for a time, Instagram wasn’t allowing me to tap the “more” button when reading user comments and I would have to tap my profile button then go back to my feed to see the full comments. Also for Chrome, I wasn’t able to tap any of the options when there would be a popup screen. Other apps also had issues with not showing the keyboard when tapping on a text box.
UPDATE 4/21/2020: This seems to be fixing itself on a app by app bases as they are being updated in the Play Store.
Like with any new device, there are bound to be a few hiccups here and there. We’ll have to wait and see how long before some of these issues will be resolved. Most of these seem to be software issues so hopefully a fix will come soon.
