Back in 2017, I bought my first smart plug, the WeMo Mini Smart Plug. For three years it has been relatively trouble-free aside from the occasional connection issues which were easily remedied. Well, three years later and I”m now checking out the WeMo WiFi Smart Plug which seems to be an updated version of this plug that is Apple HomeKit, Alexa, and Google Home compatible. Like the previous plug, you only need to plug this into an outlet and run through the setup process.
INSTALLATION
The WeMo WiFi Smart Plug requires nothing more than an outlet, the WeMo app, and a 2.4GHz WiFi connection. If you already have the app from owning other WeMo products, you’re pretty much good to go. If not, a quick download is all it takes and to register an account.
Adding a new device here went pretty smoothly. You just need to connect to the network that the WeMo WiFi Smart Plug is broadcasting. From there, you setup the name of the plug as well as which local network to connect to. That’s all. Simple.
If you have Homekit, Alexa, or Google Home, you can add the WeMo in their respective apps.
EXPERIENCE
Like before, this WeMo WiFi Smart Plug is really easy to use. Once plugged into an outlet, you can turn on and off anything connected to the plug with the WeMo app. You can also schedule when the smart plug turns on and off. This is very useful for when out of town or if you just need things to come on and off at certain times.
Next, I set up the WeMo WiFi Mini Smart Plug to work with my Google Assistant, which means I can say “turn on or off my WeMo smart plug” and it’ll do it. It also works over the Internet and not just over my local network.
FINAL THOUGHTS
The WeMo WiFi Smart Plug works as intended. I like this one over the previous WeMo Smart Plug I reviewed 3 years ago mainly because of its smaller size and because this works on three different “smart” standards now. Installation and setup is a breeze and you should have no issues getting this to work. It’s also relatively inexpensive when you see them on sale, so buy a bunch of these for around the house.
