If you’ve been following Amazfit over the past year, you’ll know that they’ve been steadily building their line-up with fitness-minded smartwatches that fit almost any budget and need. That goes for every series in their line, which includes the Amazfit GTR 2 and Amazfit GTS 2 family of watches. The latest addition to these is the Amazfit GTR 2e and the Amazfit GTS 2e. We’re combing both of these into one review because they are alike in so many ways with only minor differences to ultimately, you’re decision will come down to whether you want a round watch of a rectangular watch.

DESIGN

The new Amazfit GTR 2e and Amazfit GTS 2e look very similar to their higher-priced siblings, the Amazfit GTR 2 and Amazfit GTS 2. In fact, they’re both near identical to their counterparts. There are just a couple minor differences, but none that are really clearly visible at first glance.

Starting with the Amazfit GTR 2e, it is a tiny bit thinner than the Amazfit GTR 2. This is most likely due to the removal of the speakers as this watch no longer features taking calls on the watch, and the switch to 2.5D glass, which is flatter. Speaking of which, the glass face also sports updated markings and instead of a mark on every minute, it’s only at every 5 minutes.

On the rear, the plastic back looks relatively the same, thought the charging contacts are a bit larger than on the Amazfit GTR 2. There’s also what appears to be two mic holes now instead of just one.

Lastly, the Amazfit GTR 2e only comes in aluminum, though it’s available in three different colors now. There’s Obsidian Black, Slate Grey, and Matcha Green.

Now with the Amazfit GTS 2e, the changes are more minor, physically. The proportions are the same and the thickness seems to be the same. The front glass has changed to a 2.5D glass instead of the 3D glass and the rear of the case is now a matte plastic color instead of shiny black. I prefer the matte black as it is easier to keep clean and doesn’t attract sweat and oil prints as much.

Like the Amazfit GTR 2e, the Amazfit GTS 2e also loses the speaker and retains the one mic hole it had before. Other than that, nothing else has really changed. It comes in three new colors – Lilac Purple, Moss Green, and Obsidian Black.

FEATURES

Let’s start this off with what the Amazfit GTR 2e and Amazfit GTS 2e removed as part of their cost-cutting efforts, which really isn’t much. The speakers in both have been removed which is why these two watches no longer have the ability to take calls from the watch. Both watches also remove WLAN 2.4GHz radio and only have Bluetooth 5.0/BLE connections instead. The last thing removed is Independent Music Playback, which just means the onboard storage is gone. Instead, you can only control the music that’s on your phone. Lastly, I already mentioned the switch from 3.0D glass to 2.5D glass.

Despite these removals, Amazfit actually added something new to the Amazfit GTR 2e and Amazfit GTS 2e that aren’t found on any of their other watches. This is the inclusion of a new Temperature sensor that measures temperature based on the surface it comes into contact with. While this is a cool new feature to have, it doesn’t seem to quite accurately measure body temperature as the temperature on your wrist area is several degrees cooler than your actual body temp. Still, it’s an interesting feature to have and hopefully improves with updates.

What is the same is everything else. All the previous sensors are still there suck as the BioTracker 2.0 PPG Biological sensor that plays a vital role with all the health measurements. All the movement sensors are also present – acceleration sensor, gyroscope sensor, 3-axis geomagnetic sensor, ambient light sensor, and air pressure sensor. GPS + GLONASS is also present. What I find interesting though is that both the Amazfit GTR 2e and Amazfit GTS 2e retain the same size battery as the more pricey models, but gain longer battery life between charges. This most likely is due to the removal of the speakers and 2.4GHz connections.

The Amazfit GTR 2e goes from an average of 14 days to 24 days between charges and the Amazfit GTS 2e jumps to 14 days from 7 days. Of course, battery life really depends on usage so your times will vary but just know that it’s still a good amount especially when you compare it to other smartwatches out there that get only a few days of life per charge.

Lastly, both the Amazfit GTR 2e and Amazfit GTS 2e rely on the Zepp app to sync all your data as well as perform updates and adjust settings. You’ll also need it to change watch faces, set goals, etc. It’s become a very nice app, though it would still be nice to have some kind of data export for more services. Currently you can only sync to WeChat, Goodle Fit, Strava, and Relive on Android. I’m not sure what it can sync to on IOS, just Apple Health.

EXPERIENCE

The Amazfit GTR 2e and Amazfit GTS 2e function just like any other new Amazfit watch. They are very health and fitness minded so you won’t get a lot of extras like you would on some other smartwatches. It basically only has Amazfit apps and some smartwatch features such as notifications, alarms, scheduling, etc. It doesn’t have the ability to install apps from 3rd parties. Although you can get notification from apps on your phone, you just have to enable it in the Zepp app.

I’ve always been impressed with the battery life on Amazfit watches as well and these two are no different. I mean who honestly loves having to charge their watch every day? Not me. I like the fact that I can go more than 2 weeks between charges. The Amazfit GTR 2e lasts longer than the Amazfit GTS 2e, but not by too much.

I will say, I do like the Amazfit GTR 2e a bit more than the Amazfit GTS 2e mainly because I’m more a fan of round watches. While the Amazfit GTS 2e does look good, it uses slightly skinnier bands and I prefer the larger size on the Amazfit GTR 2e. Of course this is just down to personal preference. Also, I should mention that I always swap out the bands. The stock bands are pretty good for working out, but in my opinion, aren’t very fashionable. I swap the bands out and it gives the watch a more fashionable appearance as well as being less anonymous looking.

In terms of accuracy, both don’t seem to be any more or less accurate than past watches. I mean it seems like it’s pretty accurate, other than the temperature reading which is a few degrees lower than it should be. But I attribute that to where the sensor is placed as that’s not usually an area most people measure their body temperature at.

FINAL THOUGHTS

Both the Amazfit GTR 2e and the Amazfit GTS 2e are excellent health and fitness smartwatches. I honestly don’t mind that they removed the taking phone calls on the watch feature and Wi-Fi connections because they were features I never used on the high priced Amazfit GTR 2 and Amazfit GTS 2. If removing those makes the watches more affordable, than I’m all for it, especially if doing so increases the battery life. Not only that, they were able to add in a temperature sensor which isn’t on any other of their watches.

So which of these is right for you? Well, that’s ultimately down to personal preference. Both the Amazfit GTR 2e and Amazfit GTS 2e have the same exact features, just their shape is different and the slight battery life differences. With that said, I want to say that the Amazfit GTR 2e and the Amazfit GTS 2e are the perfect blends of affordability, features, and battery life.
