Everyone knows that you can’t use a keyboard and mouse on a console, right? Or can you? Thanks to the GameSir VX2 AimBox, using a keyboard and mouse is just as simple as using a controller thanks to this little adaptor and a handy app. What’s neat is that the GameSir VX2 AimBox works with PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and the Nintendo Switch.
The GameSir VX2 AimBox is a small box that attaches to your console via USB port. It’s mostly all black plastic with two multicolor LEDs that light up when it’s connected. On the front are three USB ports, two for your keyboard and mouse and one to connect your console’s controller. To the left is a 3.5mm AUX port for audio.
Note that I did state there is a controller port because you will need to plug your controller into it in order for the GameSir VX2 AimBox to work correctly. I’m guessing this is to trick your console into thinking that you’re using a controller, but in actuality, you’re using a keyboard and mouse.
Anyways, the GameSir VX2 AimBox has a solid build, is weighted nicely, and has rubber feet to stay planted when in use.
DOES IT WORK?
Well, sort of. Let me just say that I’ve only tried this on a PlayStation 4 and nothing else. So it might work on other consoles and it might not, but my experience on the PlayStation 4 has been a bit mixed.
I went through all the steps needed to get started. Basically, go into your PS4 settings and set the controller for wired use. Then plug in the controller into the AimBox as well as the keyboard and mouse you’ll be using. Next, plug the AimBox into your PS4 and the blue light should flash three times to show that it is connected. You’re also supposed to download the GameSir app to your smartphone so you can fine-tune its settings.
But, I could not get the app to work correctly. It does connect to the VX2 AimBox, but it states there is a firmware update that I can not update for some reason. Also when you go to the section to fine-tune settings, it just shows a blank screen for me. That for me pretty much left me in a bind because without that, I can not really use the AimBox properly.
So without fine-tuning, I was able to use the VX2 AimBox with Call of Duty in Multiplayer for testing. I could move my character around with both the keyboard and mouse, however mouse movements were set to very low sensitivity, whereas my controller I have it set to fairly high. I had no way of adjusting things again because the app for me just didn’t work. Using the keyboard and mouse in this situation was not optimal, thus I just went back to using the controller or suffer a million deaths.
Anyways, It does work, but not the way I want it to. I can see that the VX2 AimBox does grab the inputs from the keyboard and mouse so there’s that. If I can get the app to work properly or get an update that makes it work, then I may try it again. But for now, and based on the many reviews on the Play Store, the app just isn’t functioning correctly. Seems that using it on Android 12 could be an issue.
While I know the GameSir VX2 AimBox should work for the PS4, a big issue with my experience is with the app and the inability to really use it properly. Now that’s not saying you might not have a better experience because there are factors at play here that could be causing this issue. It could be an incompatibility with the Android version I’m on or with the phone itself because I’ve read reviews from others that say it works perfectly. It just doesn’t for me.
Aside from the software issues, the hardware does look really good though and I know it can receive signals from the keyboard and mouse. It’s a shame that I couldn’t get it to work perfectly because the other products I had reviewed from them were pretty good so I know they can make quality hardware.
Here’s hoping the software issues get resolved and if they do, I’ll be sure to update this post.
