Spelunky fans probably know that there’s a sequel out now in the form of Spelunky 2. Brought to you by Mossmouth and Bitworks, Spelunky 2 is the next chapter in this critically acclaimed series where our explorers now find themselves on the moon, in search of treasure and family. Spelunky 2 features everything you loved about the original game and more. Levels and challenges are again randomized so that you’ll never have the same experience twice and you can explore it all with up to four players.
The first thing you’ll notice if you’re coming from the original Spelunky are the updated graphics and art. Everything now seems a little bit smoother, a little bit more colorful, and a little bit larger. The art is still pretty recognizable and familiar to those who have played, just upgraded. Like in the previous game, the levels are randomly generated which makes for some rather interesting level designs.
Gameplay-wise, it’s classic Spelunky. The game is super fast-paced and levels seem to randomize each time you play. Enemies will randomly spawn as well as items and treasure to collect. You’ll have access to a limited supply of bombs and grappling hooks to help you along the way as well as special items you can collect and buy if you happen upon a merchant. Since Spelunky 2 is a roguelike, you will die often and all items and treasure collected do not carry over into your next playthrough.
There are three modes of play in Spelunky 2 – Adventure, Seeded Run, and Arena. Adventure is your normal quest mode. You’ll do most of your play here. Seeded Run is a mode where all the levels are fixed and not random. Enemies and items are all fixed and will spawn the same way each time. However, you can not play Seeded Run right off the bat. You’ll need to unlock it by unlocking the rest of the 12 characters in the game. Arena mode is a means of duking it out with your friends to see who’s the greatest explorer. There are two types of matches you can play and that’s Deathmatch and Hold the Idol. Both modes are super hectic and can be played as solos or as a team.
As fun as Spelunky 2 is, it can be a very frustrating game since most of the time, you’ll probably end up dying over and over again. Even seasoned platforming gamers will find Spelunky 2 quite difficult and challenging. On average, I’m only able to survive a few minutes at a time, and that’s if I’m lucky. I wouldn’t get too discouraged though because the more you play, the better you’ll get at it. So with that said, Spelunky 2 is a worthy follow-up to what was already a pretty fantastic game. You should definitely pick it up if you love games like this or just love a really good challenge.
