Moto Roader MC | Nintendo Switch Review

Moto Roader MC

Moto Roader MC is another retro title released on the Nintendo Switch. Published by Ratalaika Games, Moto Roader MC was originally released back in 1992 and is a top-down, multiplayer racing game featuring fast cars and full contact racing. What made Moto Roader MC different back in the ’90s was the ability to play with 5-players instead of the usual four.

For the most part, Moto Roader MC is a straight port of the original classic with new menus. You are also now able to create save states, change steering modes, and rewind races. There are also some video options you can change such as enabling a CRT look and changing the display size. Other than that, the game is pretty much the same as it was when it first came out.

Graphically, the Moto Roader MC is pretty retro and it shows. The top-down graphics look very 90’s with just enough detail to make out what is on the screen. Everything is pretty colorful and bright and really takes you back to your childhood.

In terms of gameplay, there are a few different modes of play you get with Moto Roader MC. You get your normal multiplayer races, a time attack mode, and an omake mode. Races are pretty straightforward and are you against 4 opponents. What made Moto Roader MC so unique back then was the ability to have 5-players when most games only had four. Time attack is basically just you racing for the best time in each course. Omake is a 1v1 mode where each player tried to make a ball into the goal. Think Rocket League, but in 2D.

The cars in Moto Roader MC aren’t normal cars either. You can fire missiles and drop pipe bombs. I would compare this to a simplified version of Mario Kart though it’s very effective against opponents and can determine whether you win or lose. The controls can be a little overly sensitive though but you can at least change the steering type so play around with that to see which you like better.

For the most part, Moto Roader MC is a pretty good port of a classic game. There are plenty of modes to keep players happy and a game that allows you to play with friends is always a win. What I find neat is that many more modern games seem to feature elements of gameplay that Moto Roader MC has had since 1992.

Moto Roader MC is available now on the Nintendo eShop, as well as for PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Microsoft Xbox One and Xbox Series X/S.
