Review: Reckless Racing v1.1.5 (iOS)

Reckless Racing is a new dirt racer developed by Pixelbite and published by EA. Unlike other racers which are usually from the first person perspective, Reckless Racing presents the race from an overhead perspective similar to many retro racing titles from long ago. This allows players to see much of the track making it easier for players to concentrate on actual racing and be less worried about what direction they need to steer. This makes racing fun for a change as you spend more time on the track and less time slamming into walls. On top of that, Reckless Racing offers the tightest controls I’ve experiences to date on any racing game I’ve played so far on my iPhone.

First lets start off with the brilliant controls that Pixelbite has set up here for Reckless Racing. Unlike other racing games that force you to use the control scheme that the  developer puts in place, Pixelbite has included 5 different control schemes to suit any type of player. You can test out each style on a practice track and it really does help you fine tune the controls to your liking.

Next are the superb graphics. The environments that Pixelbite has created are just perfect. Each track is very detailed and most of quite a bit of variation to them. The vehicles themselves also look fantastic and you really do get the sense that you are actually driving these cars on the track and not just having them float over it. You can pretty much drive anywhere on the map as long as there isn’t a wall blocking it which means you can fly of cliffs, crash into bodies of water, and flip over ramps. Everything is very nicely done and adds to the fun.

On the sound side of things, Reckless Racing is packed full of audio goodness. The “Hill Billy” style sound track really lends itself well here and the sound effects are very well done. The cars actually sound like they are sliding through rocks, dirt, water and asphalt. Pixelbite did and amazing job making this pretty realistic.

Now what makes Reckless Racing really special is the online multiplayer mode. In this mode, you can race other players in real time over the internet. This makes the game very competitive and extends the replay value of the game beyond the single player races. I do wish however that Reckless Racing would have GameCenter support to track score and achievements, but it doesn’t. It uses it’s own proprietary system that makes you have to register and account if you want to keep track of you leaderboards.

Final Thoughts

Reckless Racing is a very fun top down 3D racer. In fact, it may be the best racer of its type. Unlike some other games, Reckless Racing offers players a choice of 5 different control schemes which makes the game suitable for any driving style you might be used too. The controls are very precise and there was never a time when I was frustrated with the game due to lack of control. The physics in the game are also spot on as your car will drift through turns and lose control if you’re not careful.

I do wish there were a bit more tracks to play on as there really aren’t that many in the game and reversing the track is just a cheap trick to makes it seem like there are more tracks than there really are. Other than that, it’s a very fun racing game that will not disappoint.

Reckless Racing is available now in the App Store for $2.99 for all iOS devices.
