Review: Arcade Cats v1.0 (iOS)

Arcade Cats by Star Cat Studios is a puzzle game  where the goal of the game is to have your mice capture a set amount of diamonds within a set amount of tries. That means that if the goal is to capture 200 diamonds for instance, you’ll have X amount of mice to try and accomplish that goal. It sounds easy enough but Arcade Cats is quite challenging and will keep you busy for hours.

Arcade Cats is a very family friendly title as players of all ages should be able to pick it up fairly quickly and offers a wide range of challenges for all age groups.

On a purely gameplay standpoint, Arcade Cats is a very good puzzle game. Each level gets progressively harder and harder and it’s easy to pass time on it. There is nothing to difficult about the game and it’s easy for anyone to just pick it up and play. This isn’t a fast paced game so everyone should have no problems learning how to play this the first time around.

However, 2 things really hold this game back. I’m going to finish this off by stating that I do not like the art style of Arcade Cats. It is very bland and generic and doesn’t really offer any visual treats. If you were basing it purely on graphics, Arcade Cats would be quite boring. To add to that, the music in the game is also a snooze fest. It is also very generic sounding and repetitive. It’s these 2 areas that really holds Arcade Cats back from being an “A” title which is a shame because the puzzle element of this game is so good.

Final Thoughts

Arcade Cats is a very good puzzle game even thought I’m not really a big fan of the art style used in the game. In fact, I could argue that the art and graphics in the game seem a bit tacked on and I’m not really understanding the whole Egyptian theme on the game. I will say though that Arcade Cats is a solid puzzle game that offers up quite a bit of challenge for the entire family.

In future updates, the main thing I’d like to see is support for iOS4’s multitasking. As of right now, if you exit the game to go do something else, you have to reload the game from the title screen and start whatever level you were on all over again. I’d also like to see an improvement in the graphics and art as well as more variation with the music and sounds.

You can purchase Arcade Cats right now in the App Store for $1.99.
