Review: Explore the Animal Kingdom v1.1 (iOS)

Here’s a great little educational app just for the kids that comes from independent developer, Mathieu Brassard. The app is called Explore the Animal Kingdom and the main goal of the app is to teach kids many different kinds of animals and the sounds they make. At the moment, there are around 92 different animals featured in the app, all with their own sounds. Explore the Animal Kingdom is a very simple app children of all ages will be able to pick it up quickly. Even infants have been shown to use this app with ease. Navigating through the app is as easy as swiping and tapping. Animals are presented full screen with the name of the animal below the image. Tapping the screen allows you to hear what the animal sounds like and swiping lets you move to the next animal.

This really is a great app for children. It helps them recognize so many different kinds of animals and what’s great about it is that Explore the Animal Kingdom actually uses real animal sounds. The images used for each animal are clear and represent each animal well. It’s also good that this app uses real pictures of animals as sometimes cartoon version of animals make it difficult to spot the real versions. It’s also great that you can hear the name of each animal by tapping the name. This is helpful for children who can not yet read or have trouble pronouncing words. I also like the fact that they use different voices for each animal’s name so that it’s not the same person’s voice over and over again.

There are a few things however that I’d like for the developer to add. Some of the animal sounds are also a bit too short and I think they should be a little bit longer for you to really get an idea of what that animal sounds like. Also, I’m sure with each update, more and more animals will be added – I hope. I’d also maybe like to see more than one image of each animal although i’m not sure how they could do this without making it overly complicated. Other than that, it’s a perfect children’s app for learning a wide variety of animals.

Explore the Animal Kingdom is available now in the App Store for $1.99. It is a universal app so it will work on all iOS devices.
