Today at The Gamer With Kids, we are going to take a look at a new educational title for children that focuses on math skills, specifically counting and some basic addition and subtraction. The game is called BugMath and its by Zixxe Pte.
BugMath is a fun educational math app with a cute theme. Kids learn alongside an alien friend named Ug-ug. Ug-ug is an alien who has crashed his ship on a mysterious planet filled with bugs that try to attack. It’s up to you to help Ug-ug fend off the bug invaders by using your math skills. There are 5 different mini-games and each one teaches something different.
The first thing you’ll notice about BugMath are its graphics. They are very well done and colorful. Ug-ug is a very strange but fun looking alien. The bugs in the game are also quite interesting in design. Overall, the whole look and feel of the game is very fun and alien and should really spark interest in a child. My son surely thought they were funny looking.
There are 5 different mini-games your child can play. They are the following:
- Bug Attack!: The bugs want to defeat Ug-ug and steal his spaceship! Help Ug-ug zap the falling bugs before they land on the ground and count along each time Ug-ug zaps a bug. 1, 2, 3, 4, 5… there are 100 bugs to beat!
- Counting Game: Ug-ug helps to teach double-digit numbers 11-20. Count the number of bugs on the screen and paint the numbers and the words!
- Big & Small: Help sharpen Ug-ug’s skills by putting the little and big bugs in the correct order—from smallest to biggest or biggest to smallest. Find the right answer and watch an even larger bug munch on the others!
- Plus Minus Bugs: Ug-ug wants to practice his addition and subtraction skills. You can tap on the bugs to count up or down to find the correct answer!
- Matching: Oh no, several pairs of bugs are trying to stow away on Ug-ug’s spaceship! Tap on the spaceships to aid Ug-ug in finding and matching the hiding bugs.
My son played this game for a while and he thought it was pretty fun due to the graphics and sound. He wasn’t really into the number counting game as he already knows how to do that. His favorites were Bug Attack! and the matching game. Plus Minus Bugs is okay but can get a bit advanced especially when adding double digit numbers or subtracting double digit numbers. He ends up just clicking every answer for that until he gets it right but I don’t think he’s really learning anything from that. He might still be a bit young for that portion of the game.
BugMath is a great educational app for children of all ages. When they are are real young, they may not be able to play all the games correctly but they will grow into the more advanced games. The game has a fun alien theme attached to it with really colorful graphics and fun sounds that most children should like. The games themselves are pretty fun as well even though they are educational games. The only suggestion I would make for this game is to have a way to scale each game based on the age of your child. That way, each game can be tailored to your child’s age range allowing them to play each game and not feel like it’s too hard for them.
BugMath is available now in the App Store for $1.99. Please note that it only works on iOS devices that are 4.1 or higher.
