TGWK’s Review of “Dog Pile HD” v1.3 (iPad)

Dog Pile HD is a new casual game from developers ArtWitz Design and JoshOClock (aka Skymodo). The game is a cross between your classic match-3 game and plinko. What you do in the game is drop these cute little dog characters from the top of the board and watch them fall as they move around obstacles to get to the bottom of the board. The bottom of the board contains groups of different dogs in which you must match them up with the falling dog in order to get rid of them. You finish each board by removing all the dogs before time runs out.

The game itself isn’t hard to play. You’ll be utilizing most of what your iPad has to offer to play this game which means most of the controls require you either tapping, swiping, or tilting the device to get your dog where you need it to go. It’s good to see when a game makes full use of everything the device has to offer because it really gets you into the game by making you use multiple elements. You aim which direction you want to drop the dog by swiping the directional arrow to move it. You then tap the screen to drop it. After which, you can tilt your iPad from left to right to alter the direction of gravity in the game.

Dog Pile HD has a fair amount of levels and stages you can play, each with its own unique theme. The game itself does add some extras that are in addition to the core game. Each level contains three bones you can collect. You use these bones to customize the look of your dogs in the game. It’s not necessary to do this to enjoy the game, but it’s always nice to see developers add these little extras for their fans.

Dog Pile HD is a fun game for the entire family. The art elements in the game are very cute and will appeal to most children thanks also in part to the audio elements in the game. The game isn’t that hard to play and most kids will be able to pick it up quickly as well. The later levels as you open them up do get a bit more challenging but this is the part that will appeal to the adults. Either way you look at it, Dog Pile HD is a good game that the whole family can enjoy.

Dog Pile HD is available now in the App Store for $0.99. It is compatible with iPad. Requires iOS 3.2 or later. You can try the free version here.
