King of Opera is a multiplayer game from developer Tuokio Inc. It’s a game where the goal is to gain the most points possible by being the king of the opera. Opera obviously is the theme of the game which means that you will be playing the role of an opera singer. As an Opera singer, you want to steal the lead from whoever has it. You do so by knocking the other players off the stage and stealing the spotlight from them. Watch out because the other players are trying to do the same as well.
What I like about King of Opera is the unique theme of it. I don’t think I’ve ever run across a game where the main theme was singing opera. Sure, this game could have used something like sumo wrestlers or bumper cars, but the use of the opera singers and the use of audio in this game is really well done and gives it a different feel. The opera singing itself really doesn’t play a role in the gameplay, it’s just there as an over all theme.
Controls in the game are a bit simplistic with only 1 button that makes your guy move forward only. You see, when not pressed, all your guy does is spin around in a circle. Whatever direction he’s facing when you press the button is the direction he moves in. It can make for a slightly frustrating control scheme when you first start out but you get used to it after a while. I guess they do it this way since you can play with up to 4 players on one device so they had to come up with the simplest control scheme possible. I would have however liked to have seen some motion type control scheme where I could tilt the device to move my player, but again, that would not be an ideal solution for a same device multiplayer game.
King of Opera is a unique game that can be enjoyed with friends or by yourself thanks to AI bots. Obviously playing it on the larger iPad allows for a less cramped play space but the game can still be enjoyed on the smaller iPhone and iPod Touch. The AI can be a bit “cheap” at times and the controls themselves could be a bit better but overall it’s still a pretty fun game to play.
King of Opera is available now in the App Store for $0.99. It is a universal app and is compatible with iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad. Requires iOS 3.0 or later.

We, the guys at Tuokio, conceive games by drawing inspiration from things that matter to us. From the warmly-remembered childhood family board game nights and from the immediacy, addictivity and simplicity of coin-op arcade games.
♬ You Provide the Setting, We Serve the Fun ♬
With King of Opera we wanted to offer families and friends a game that would allow them to “play loud” (laugh, taunt, shout and sing) while sitting around a table at home, at friend’s house, at a cafe or in the office, and socializing. We aimed to make a game that is enjoyable by gamers and non-gamers, both young and old.
To meet these targets, King of Opera was made playable by up to four players while sitting face-to-face, the game’s controls were reduced to a single (virtual) button, its gameplay was made non-violent yet into the form of a wacky battle, and the setting was chosen as not to offend anyone yet be weird enough to amuse most everyone.
