HeyHey Colors is a coloring book app from developer HeyHey Apps. Where most coloring book app feature generic drawings to color in, HeyHey Colors features art from famed street artist, Bue the Warrior. Like other apps, you’ll be able to paint the entire picture using a variety of colors, patterns, and tools as well as saving your finished product and sharing them via email. HeyHey Colors also makes use of Airprint so that your child can directly print out their creations.

A major part of the charm in HeyHey Colors comes from the art of Bue the Warrior. His drawing are very well done and have a child-like appeal to them. Many of the drawings are inspired by his very own street art. There are 18 drawing total that children can color and each can be colored in multiple times and saved into individual galleries within the app. The app itself also has a very fun feel to it as most of the UI elements seem to have been drawn by Bue the Warrior as well.

There are three ways you can color. You can either use the basic fill method where you just pick a color and tap on an area you want completely filled.  You can also choose a pattern from pattern chooser and fill in an area like this as well. The third method is less imprecise. You use spray cans and manually spray the area you want to color. If you spray carefully, the app will usually keep you within the lines unless you are way past the lines in which case, it’ll just spray into the new area. Whichever method you choose though, coloring in HeyHey Colors is quite simple and intuitive.

Now, the one thing that really sets HeyHey Colors apart from other coloring book apps that’s I’ve tried is the amount of audio that is in this app. Almost every tap or swipe you make triggers a sound effect and while drawing, each drawing has its own ambient sounds. When using the fill tool, it even sounds like music if you fill in different areas quickly. It’s a really nice touch and one that really makes the whole experience that more enjoyable.

HeyHey Colors is a fantastic coloring book app and one that seems to get everything just right. The drawings by Bue the Warrior are really good and there are just enough to keep your young ones busy. HeyHey Colors is near perfect except for a few additions I’d like to see the developers make. For starters, I’d like to see an undo button as there were times where I’d sprayed an area by accident but could not go back and undo it. Instead I had to just color over the area with another color. I’d also like to see more sharing options like being able to post creations to Facebook, Flickr, or any other social network. Those are really the only two items I’d like to see, besides of course more of Bue the Warrior’s drawings on here.
