PlaySquare Presents WordWorld’s Pirate Ship (iOS App Review)

playsquare_iconNow here’s a new concept that I haven’t really seen before in all my years of looking at children’s apps. This app is from PlaySquare and it’s one of the first apps to feature what they call, Touchable Television. Touchable Television is a nutritious, active, engaging new media experience that’s a story and a game all in one. What that means is that while it may look like you are watching a traditional television show, you are actually able to interact with it and play along by performing activities on the screen itself. The first app to make use of this is WordWorld’s Pirate Ship, featuring characters from the the popular PBS show, WordWorld.

Basically what this app appears to be is a television episode where children can follow along with the story that is unfolding on the screen. As they watch however, they’ll soon come across sections where they’ll be able to participate in what is going on and help the WordFriends on their adventure. They’ll be completing tasks like look for letters to complete words to avoiding obstacles by tilting the screen or tapping the screen. There are 11 different activities they can participate in while watching the show. They will have to complete each of the activities to help move the story along.

The app includes1 episode, WordWorld’s Pirate Ship, though there is an additional episode they can download. Parents will need to download this for them as it is locked behind a password. Additional episodes will be added regularly after that.

PlaySquare’s Touchable Television app is very impressive. My kids watch a ton of shows already so what’s better than watching a show in which they can also participate in order to move the story along. Not only that, the app is based off of a popular PBS educational show, WordWorld, so it will help with the development of early literacy skills, including: Rhyming, letter recognition, letter sounds, word building, and word recognition. Your kids will spend hours with this app, especially with new episodes being added, I know mine did.
