Dark Echo Review – Survival Horror Done Differently [iOS]

darkecho_iconReady for something different? You may want to check out RAC7 Games’ Dark Echo, one of the most unique games I’ve played all year on the iPhone. Dark Echo is a survival horror game, but you’ve never seen a survival horror game like this before. You rely on both sound and light to guide you through the game’s many levels and dangers, which are completely pitch black.

That’s right, each level in this game is completely black. The only way you can “see” the levels are by making sounds from either walking or tapping which create echos (represented by light) that bounce of walls and other objects. Those echos will travel a good distance to show you where hallways are or what the shape of a room looks like that you are in. In later levels, they will also show you things like locations of dangerous areas, door switches, and also enemies who are chasing you or need to be avoided. All of these are represented in different colors.

What makes the game a bit nerve racking is that you don’t know what any of these levels look like when you start them because everything is hidden in darkness. Also, the sounds that hear in this totally dark environment can be absolutely terrifying, especially if you are playing the game with headphones. I can’t even imagine what this game would be like in 3D, but all I know is that I would be completely frozen in place if it were real.

Dark Echo isn’t a very difficult game to play though. The controls are pretty basic and so far, the levels haven’t really been too challenging. Mainly you would play this really for the creepy atmosphere and the overall uniqueness of the experience. Again, it’s best to play this with headphones on for the full experience. However, if you’re too creeped out by the music, you can turn turn the sounds down and play based off the visual cues. It’s not hard to play this way either but it does lesson the overall impact of the game. Either way, Dark Echo is a rather unique game in the land of survival horror and one you should seriously check out if you’re a fan of the genre.
