Green Riding Hood Review – An Organic Fairy Tale [iPad]

greenridinghood_iconIt’s been a while since I’ve looked at a storybook app mainly because you don’t really come back to them after. Most read through them a couple of times and that’s it, there’s nothing left to really do in them. That’s not to say there aren’t a few exceptions. Take for instance Green Riding Hood by Bobaka. This seems like a typical storybook app, but it has a few things up its sleeve to keep you coming back for more.

Green Riding Hood is a different take on the popular children’s story, Little Red Riding Hood, that takes a more ‘friendly’ approach to the story. Most of the story deals with eating healthy and living a fit life as well as making it so that the wolf doesn’t devour anyone. This is a story where the kids won’t be afraid of the big bad wolf.

Like most really good storybook apps, this one has lots of interactive elements on each page. Some are short games while others are objects they can tap on to start cute animations. Green Riding Hood also includes full narration by Alistair Findlay. Since this is a kids gook, the art and animations are really well done and are illustrated by award winning illustrator, Andrey Gordeev.

What sets Green Riding Hood apart from other storybook apps though is the included healthy cookbook that you can access from the main menu. There are 10 items in all you can learn how to make and they are simple items too so your kids can help out with the preparation. I can’t say how good the meals actually are as I haven’t tried making any of them, but they sound tasty.

Green Riding Hood is a cute story and an interesting take on a classic tale. Storybook apps are still a rather good way to get your kids interested in reading, as long as they are done right. This one is. There are lots of interactive elements and I really like how they’ve included an extra cookbook to extend its usefulness. This is one storybook your kids are sure to enjoy.
