One of the coolest features on the Sony Xperia Z3 was the ability to record my games from the device. I was able to record gameplay videos and upload them straight to Youtube. With the Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge, this wasn’t an option out of the box. There’s no app preloaded on the device that does this and had to head on over to Google Play to find a similar app that would fit my needs. There were a ton of apps to choose from, but one that caught my eye was one called Game Recorder+ which so happened to have been created by Samsung Electronics Games. I guess what better game recording app to try out for the Galaxy S6 Edge than one made by Samsung, right?
Game Recorder+only serves one purpose and it’s to record game footage on your smartphone. In my case, it’s the Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge. It works on most of the newer model Galaxy devices but not any other Android smartphones apparently. The app is simple enough to use. You can either launch it from the homescreen icon or have it set where the app launches on its own when you start up a game, and again it only records games not not regular apps.
An app icon sits on top of your game. Tap it to start recording and tap it again to stop. This little app icon can also display what showing from your front cam if you want that “Let’s Play” feel to your videos or can show a static photo. You can even choose whether to record game audio or your voice audio.
What you cannot do is hide the floating app button from recorded video footage, which I find odd as not everyone will want something hovering over their videos. Maybe Samsung will fix this in an update. If you check out the video below, you can see how the little icon sits on top the whole time. I had to move it somewhere that was out of the way where it wouldn’t interfere with the game’s controls.
If you checked out the video, you’ll also see that the video is also a tiny bit laggy. This was recorder in 1080p with the app trying to optimize memory usage. It’s not terrible but you can tell that there are some frame drops and it’s not as fluid as you might like it. However, it could also because I’m trying to record Goat Simulator and that is a pretty CPU intensive game.
Overall, Samsung’s Game Recorder+ app really isn’t that bad at all. It’s free and does what it says it does. Hopefully Samsung will continue working on this and optimize it a bit more so it can capture games more smoothly and will have an option to hide the floating app icon if you don’t want it to display. The app certainly has the potential to be good if Samsung can continue improving it.
