I’m not going to lie. I stink at Wonder Boy: The Dragon’s Trap. I haven’t really played an old school retro side scroller like this in a long time so it kinda threw me off. Since this is basically a graphical remake of an old game, the original mechanics are still lurking underneath and as you know, old game like this were notoriously difficult to play and be good at unless you had lots of practice. My first 10 minutes are anything but great and I fail quite a bit through my run.
What I can say about the game though is that the updated art is simple gorgeous and really does a lot to modernize the original game. What’s really neat is that with a push of a button, you can switch between the new HD graphics and the old 8-bit graphics. You really get to see just how much different they are, yet similar at the same time.
The gamepaly is your traditional platform game and as far as I can tell, faithful to the original. Again, I stuck my first go around and you can see that from the gameplay video below. I did start getting the hang of it a bit towards the end so hopefully I can grab more footage later of the game with less “newbie” fails on my part.
Wonder Boy: The Dragon’s Trap will launch tomorrow, April 18th on PlayStation 4, XB1, and Nintendo Switch.
