Son of Scorgasm Review | PS Vita

Son of Scorgasm

Sony’s powerhouse of a portable, the PS Vita is dead, or so they want you to believe. The truth is that it’s still alive and well thanks to a host of third party indie developers who still have faith in the platform. The PS Vita is a great system for playing many of these indie developed titles on the go.  One such recent game is that of Son of Scorgasm by Charlie’s Games.

In Son of Scorgasm, you only have one simple objective – Destroy all of the evil space baddies and rescue the King of the Earth’s beloved biscuit tin! Blast and maneuver your way through various levels full of evasive  enemies, traps, red hot lasers and  atmospheric explosions!

Son of Scorgasm

Son of Scorgasm is a twin stick shooter at its core, one that resembles a game like the Geometry Wars series. The main difference is in its content and the difficulty. Son of Scorgasm seems way harder right off the bat and I think that has a lot to do with how much smaller the actual play area is. Unlike other games of this type, the area you can move around is quite small and cramped which limits your movements and makes enemy engagement that much harder. Not only that, the enemies appear almost non stop in each level so you want to make sure you can dispatch each wave as quickly as possible or risk being overwhelmed by enemies in such a confined space. If you do feel like you’re about to bite the big one, you can always set off an area explosion that destroys whatever is around you quickly, and it does seem like you can use this quite often without penalty.

Son of Scorgasm

Visually, the game looks pretty good. It’s not quite as pretty as Geometry Wars, but it has that kinda retro look to it that reminds me of something like Tempest. There’s not much to really distract you from the gameplay and everything shown is there for a reason. Accompanying the visuals is an audio track that keeps the pace fast and hectic. It’s not techno beats, but it’s pretty catchy.

Final Thoughts

Son of Scorgasm is a solid entry in the twin stick shooting genre. It’s got that classic arcade feel mixed in with some really interesting gameplay mechanics that keeps the game fun, fast, and challenging. The visuals are good along with the audio track and effects and most of it is just a treat to play.

The downside however is the difficulty and it may frustrate more casual players. however hardcore players or those wanting a challenge should absolutely love this. Son of Scorgasm makes for a wonderful portable game that you can play for a few minutes or for hours at a time.
