I find it somewhat surprising that while some big named brands like Samsung, HTC, and even LG will sometimes abandon slightly older phones and no longer provide updates, there are some smaller “unknown” brands that continue to provide updates even though their phones might not be the most powerful. Take for instance the Unihertz Jelly Pro. I reviewed the diminutive Jelly Pro almost a year ago and at the time, it had specs that weren’t exactly what I’d call desirable. It only had a 1.1Ghz Quad Core processor and 2GB of ram. However, the point of the phone wasn’t power. It was portability and having a second device that you could carry around with you at all times if you had a second number.
Here’s the thing, with a device like that, you don’t really need much in terms of updates because it’s really meant as a backup phone. Yet a year later the Unihertz Jelly Pro now runs Android 8.1 Oreo, which I find surprising and incredible. Here’s the kicker too, it’s not just them updating the OS just for the sake of updating it. They even added a new feature, Face ID so you can unlock the device with face detection.
This little Unihertz Jelly Pro never ceases to amaze me.
