Steel Rats – First 15 Minutes of Gameplay and Impressions | PS4 Review

Steel Rats

Steel Rats is a 2.5D action arcade game on motorcycles. When I first saw the game, it reminded me a lot of Trials, because of the stunts and motorcycles. What makes it different though is the inclusion of the combat elements, the ability to move between two different planes, and the fact that there’s a story element included.

Steel Rats is about a biker gang, stepping up to stop and alien robot invasion from taking over Coastal City. No one knows where these Junkbots come from, but the Steel Rats are stepping up to give humanity a chance.

One of the main things about Steel Rats that really has everyone talking is the gameplay. Let me just start this off by saying that for the most part, the gameplay is solid in Steel Rats with very little to complain about. The controls are pretty responsive and easy to learn and I’d say fairly similar to other side scrolling motorcycle games. There are however some additional features added that make Steel Rats unique. For instance, your motorcycle can power up its front wheels to form a WheelSaw that can destroy objects and obstacles in your path. Not only that, your bike also seems to have the ability to cling to walls and ceilings allowing you to defy gravity and reach places you would normally not be able to reach. It’s pretty neat, but all these extra abilities require input from you as they don’t just automatically happen. That’s good because it keep you engaged in the gameplay where you take a more active roll.

Other gameplay elements include puzzle solving, item collecting, and trying to complete challenges in order to gain higher scores after each level.

The other bit of Steel Rats that has people talking is the art. It’s very well done. Mostly what grabs your attention are the environments. They are pretty realistic looking, very moody and dark. It has that post-apocalyptic look that fits the story well. Animations are very fluid and makes the game overall quite responsive. Again, this game reminds me a lot of the Trials series, which isn’t a bad thing at all.

With that said, Steel Rats is a pretty good game. It’s a pretty interesting take on the action arcade genre and the use of motorcycles makes it unique. It’s especially interesting how versatile you motorcycle is and how they’ve implemented all these neat little features into it. It really opens up the gameplay and what you can do. If you’re looking for a fun little indie game that looks good, has great gameplay, and is fairly different and unique, I’d suggest checking out Steel Rats.
