Sony WH-1000XM3 Noise Canceling Headphones | Review

Sony WH-1000XM3

There are all types of headphones available to you now whether it be full-on headphones that go over your ears or little wireless earbuds that go in your ear. I’ve seen them all and what I can tell you is that while in-ear headphones are convenient and lightweight and can fit in your pocket when not in use, nothing beats the comfort and sound of a set of over the ear headphones. Take for example the latest from Sony, the WH-1000XM3 which is their latest and greatest noise-canceling headphones.

Design

The Sony WH-1000XM3 are great looking headphones. They have a clean, minimal look that will appeal to a wide range of people. What makes them clean in my opinion is the fact that there isn’t very much to distract you from the overall design and aesthetics.

The version I received is the matte black with rose gold accents.

I’ll start with the generously padded headband up top for maximum comfort. It’s very thick and very comfortable. The same goes for the ear pads which fit around your ears perfectly. I also like the fact that the headphones themselves don’t feel very tight around your head. Sometimes when they’re too tight, it can become quite uncomfortable and even cause headaches. These have just the right amount of tightness where they stay on but don’t feel overly tight.

I mentioned earlier about the minimal design and that carries over to the controls. There are only two actual buttons on the Sony WH-1000XM3 and they are located on the left ear cup. One is for power and the other is to turn on and off noise cancellation and ambient sounds. You can change this button to activate Google Assistant, but you’ll need the Sony Headphones app for that.

The rest of the controls are “hidden” because the entire right ear cup is touch-enabled. You can use it to swipe between songs as well as swipe the volume levels. What’s really cool though is that if you completely place your whole palm over the right ear cup, you’ll be able to hear the sounds around you without having to take off your headphones.

Audio Performance

The Sony WH-1000XM3 sounds amazing and is one of the best sounding headphones I’ve used to date. My previous favorites were the JBL Everset Elite 300 headphones which were also noise canceling. There are many similarities between the Sony and JBL headphones, but ultimately, the Sony won out thanks in part to its much better connected app and the audio quality just sounded a tad better. The Sony WH-1000XM3 also feels much more comfortable due to the fact that these are over-the-ear units and not on-the-ear units.

I tried these out with several different genres of music and you can clearly tell just how good these are. Highs are crisp and clear while the bass and deep and low. There’s a good dynamic range through the whole spectrum and there was nothing these headphones couldn’t handle. Thanks to the noise-canceling, you’re also completely immersed in your music with no outside distractions.

Connect App

I’ve used other headphones before that had their own connected app and Sony’s is by far the best one. To get the most out of your Sony WH-1000XM3 you will want to download the Headphones Connect app as it will allow you to modify a ton of settings and customize how your headphones will sound.

There are a lot of settings to play with, such as the equalizer, sound quality modes, the sound position, and the type of surround sound. The app can also optimize the noise cancellation based on the shape of your ears and the atmospheric pressure and the same goes for the 360 Reality Audio setup. There’s seriously a lot to play with here so you’ll want to spend time with it to get the perfect sound profile for yourself.

I should also note that these headphones will work with virtual assistants, but you’ll need to set that up manually.

Final Thoughts

The Sony WH-1000XM3 is my favorite wireless headphone right now, although that might change seeing as the Sony WH-1000XM4 has just been released. Regardless, if you can pick these up for a sizable discount, they’re still well worth the price. These are the most comfortable headphones I’ve used and the sound quality is just amazing.

With that said, if you’re looking for a terrific set of wireless noise-canceling headphones, the Sony WH-1000XM3 is still one of the best choices you can make.
