I’m one of those fans who actually started The Coma series backward. My first experience with the game came with the sequel, The Coma 2: Vicious Sisters on Nintendo Switch, and had never experienced the original on PC when it first came out. However now, I’m able to enjoy the first game – The Coma: Recut, an updated version of the original thriller with enhanced character graphics, animations, and lore. In a way, maybe it’s better I didn’t play this on PC because this version of the game seems to be the definitive experience to play. and I can take it with me on the go.
The Coma: Recut follows Youngho, a student at Sehwa High. After spending all night studying for his final exams, Youngho has an eerie dream. He arrives at school the next morning and learns someone tried to commit suicide in school the night before. Despite this, class goes on. Youngho drifts asleep during the final only to wake and find himself trapped in the school at night. The only problem is… he’s not alone. Can you survive the night at Youngho High?

So with these types of games that are heavily story driven, I find it best not to really tell you anything else45 about it because a massive part of the experience is the story. What I will say though is that it is very deep and aside from what is presented to you through means of gameplay, you can also collect notes throughout the games. These are extra bits of story detail that you can read through so you can get a better understanding of world and what’s going on.
What is nice now is that if you haven’t played either of The Coma games, this is a good place to start. If you’ve only played the second one like me, this is the perfect time to go back and play the first one too.

The Coma: Recut is a survival horror game. Much of the game involves exploration in the dark with only your trusty flashlight to light several feet in front of you. The flashlight is needed to find clues, though with it on, it’s easier for enemies to spot you. On the the subject of enemies, you have zero ways of fighting back. Instead, you’re only means of survival is to run and find a place to hide. From there, you must wait until they stop the chase and you can come back out and continue exploring.
If you’re unlucky enough to get injured, your health does not regenerate. The only way to gain it back is by eating snacks you find or buy. So make sure you always have a supply with you, otherwise, you won’t last very long. I suggest saving often and using multiple saves.

So is The Coma: Recut worth a buy? If you’ve never played it, I would say yes. This game leads into The Coma 2, and there’s a reason why that game has won several awards. That makes it a good enough reason to check out the first game so you can learn more about the lore in this series. While not quite as good as the second game, it’s still worth a playthrough and at least this is an updated version of the game.
The Coma: Recut is available now on the Nintendo eShop.
Received game from developer and/or publisher for coverage purposes.
