Our televisions have become the center of all that is entertainment. This includes watching our favorite shows, movies, playing all our favorite games, and even computing. And I know for a fact that when we’re sitting in front of your TVs, it isn’t on an office chair or on a dining room chair, but most likely you got your butt planted on the couch. While comfortable and perfect for channel flipping, this is hardly the best ergonomics for using a keyboard and mouse or even a laptop. That’s why the Nerdytec Couchmaster CYCON² was created. This is an ergonomic lap desk optimized for the gamer that creates a level of comfort, unlike anything you’ve seen before.
The Nerdytec Couchmaster CYCON² was created to allow couch gamers an ergonomic way to use their keyboard and mouse. This is in part thanks to the two side cushions which provide better support for your shoulders and neck muscles, reducing tension in those areas. They also allow for a straighter sitting position to reduce back strain.
The heart of the system though is the CYCON² lap desk. This has been updated from the previous version with some smarter design decisions. For starters, there are now six USB 3.0 ports to accommodate a wide range of devices you might need to plug in. Second, the cable management system has been updated to make it easier to get to. The rear flaps now feature magnets that make them much more accessible, though there are still screws you can use if you would rather make the setup more permanent.
There’s also now a specially designed USB cable that consolidates everything so you need only plug in one cable to your computer or hub for your many devices. This cable also delivers power with the included power supply unit for devices that might require more power to operate. There are also two USB ports located on the top of the CYCON² for easy access, in case you need to plug something in like a USB thumb drive or even a temporary accessory. One of those ports is also a quick charging port.
Setup of course is super simple. Open up the back panels and you’ll see where four of the USB ports are and where the power connector is. There are also entry holes on the top where you can feed the cables from your keyboard, mouse, headset, etc. into the wire management compartment. It’s actually a pretty ingenious way of keeping all the cables managed and clutter-free. If you’re inclined to do so, you can also Velcro down your keyboard to the CYCON² to keep it from moving around as well as the mouse pad.
What you don’t want to do is use Velcro on the side cushion as the instructions specifically tell you not to. The cushions and the CYCON² were meant to be separate units making it easier to adjust for the proper width and closeness. Not only that, but you can also use the CYCON² without the side cushions if your chair you’re using has armrests already. The whole system is fairly modular so you can set it up based on your needs.
Speaking of the side cushions, one of them has pockets so you can store stuff like remotes, little accessories, or even a drink, although I wouldn’t really use them to hold drinks unless it’s a closed container. The side cushions are also available in a few different material types. The one we received was a micro-fiber type of material that was very soft. The cushions have quite a bit of firm padding on the inside and for the most part, are very supportive.
So is the Nerdytec Couchmaster CYCON² worth a purchase? That depends. If you game on your couch and this includes PC gaming as well, then you need it. It makes using your keyboard and mouse so much more comfortable and the built-in cable manager keeps things more organized. Even if you don’t PC game from your couch, this is a great solution for those who maybe want to use their laptops on the couch as well. Overall, the Nerdytec Couchmaster CYCON² seems like a good buy. Quality is pretty good and the build is solid. If you’re in search of a great lap desk, you can’t go wrong with the Nerdytec Couchmaster CYCON².
