Raptic may be a name you’re not familiar with but they basically make cases for some of the most popular phones out there, including those from Apple and Samsung. Though the brand Raptic is new, the company that makes them isn’t. Raptic was once known as X-Doria which we’ve actually covered extensively back when I used to have an iPhone 4 and iPhone 5. Now they go by Raptic and their cases, while still stylish, are geared more towards increased protection and durability. What we’re checking out from them right now is their Raptic Shield and Shield Pro case for the Samsung Galaxy S21 and Galaxy S21 Ultra.
The Raptic Shield is a hybrid case utilizing hard polycarbonate, soft rubber, and anodized aluminum. Basically, the rear plate is polycarbonate with fused rubber edges. The aluminum runs around the rear edges of the case to add extra reinforcement.
The polycarbonate back is clear so you can see the original color of your phone. However, as we know with all clear cases, be wary of cust or dirt getting stuck in between the case and phone. It can be an unsightly eyesore but can also scratch either the inside of the case or your phone. Surrounding the backplate is an aluminum border that can be either in the color black, red, or iridescent. If you choose the red or black color, the rubber edges will be black, If you pick up the iridescent color choice, the rubber will be dark gray.
Aside from the materials, the design is pretty nice. The back has a very angular design while the aluminum border has chamfered edges. The rubber edges are fairly smooth to the touch and have lines etched into the top and bottom of the case. The top and bottom edges along with the corners also seem a bit thicker than the side edges. I should also point out that the case covers the gap most other cases have between the camera bump and the case. This goes a long way towards keeping dust and dirt out from inside the case. This also makes the case flat in the back.
There is one design element here though that is much different than in other cases I’ve seen and that has to do with the power and volume covers. On the Raptic Shield, these are flush with the edges of the case and only these little dots let you know where these buttons are. If we’re going by touch, it can be a little tricky feeling for these buttons, but you will get used to it after a while. It does make for a cleaner look, but just note that it takes a bit of getting used to. The top and bottom edges are also raised to help protect the screen, though the side edges are not and sit a bit lower than the screen.
The Raptic Shield is rated for 10ft drops and feature military-grade protection. If you move up to the Shield Pro, it’s 13ft. This is in part to an extra layer on the inside of the case called DropShield. Let’s not forget either that it also offers antimicrobial protection against germs and growth.
Whichever you choose, the Raptic Shield is a very well-made, protective case. It features everything you’d want in a protective case – military-grade protection, shock absorption, and good looks. The case doesn’t cost that much either at only $29.99 which I would consider a steal based on what it has to offer.
