I’m a certified case hoarder. That’s no secret. For every device I own, I have multiple cases laying around waiting for their turn to be used and abused. You see, I’m the type who likes to swap cases often and regularly depending on my mood and overall satisfaction with my current case. I usually get bored of a case within a few weeks and will swap it out for something new or rotate an older case back into use. Of course I like new better and am always on the look out for something new and interesting. That brings me to the Case Logic Smart Snap case for the iPad Mini. It’s a hard shell case with a built in smart cover. It not only protects your iPad Mini, but also acts as a stand for viewing movies and typing.

Design

fsi-1082_fs_thumb4_sized_525x544The Case Logic Snap View case is very much like most smart cover cases out there that features a hard shell, polycarbonate rear and an attached smart cover. The design of this one is a little bit different however because of the way the smart cover is attached.

First, the case itself is basic black, fairly slim, but still very rigid. It feels like it could take some decent drops and bumps without sustaining any real damage. The case will protect the rear of your iPad Mini as well as offering good corner protection and edge protection. The top edges however aren’t quite as raised as I’d like them and leaves a tiny bit of the top and bottom screen edges exposed. Still, it’s a good design and has all the necessary cutouts for all ports, speakers, buttons, and the rear camera.

fsi-1082_fs_thumb5_sized_525x544Attached to the main case is Case Logic’s version of the smart cover. Instead of it being attached to the side of the case, it is attached to the underside of the case. The cover itself also has only 1 fold in it instead of the usual 2 or three that you see on other smart cover designs. That is because the Snap View case functions as a stand a bit differently than others. The cover acts as the base and has grooves in it in which the edge of the hard case sits. Because of the way the cover is attached to the rear, the case sits at an angle and allows for three viewing positions. This actually makes the case much more useful and sturdy than those with typical smart cover designs. If you fold the cover and tuck it into the back, you can turn it over for an angled typing position. I actually prefer this type of design much more than the regular ones because it allows for more viewing angles and it really is much more sturdy when propped up.

The cover is fairly rigid and is wrapped in a canvas-like material. The inside is some kind of synthetic fabric that is fairly soft and doesn’t seem like it would scratch the iPad’s screen. There are also magnets embedded that activate the iPad’s sleep/wake functions automatically. At the bottom corner of the cover is an elastic strap that can be used to secure the cover to the case so that the cover does not flap open on it own.

Final Thoughts

The Case Logic Snap View case for the iPad Mini is actually a very good case. I did not even know they made cases for iPads until Case Logic sent me this review unit and only thought they made things like CD and DVD disc holders. The case is very slim and totally functional with a surprising good amount of quality to it. This is definitely one of the better cases I’ve used in a while of this type despite it not being made of premium materials like genuine leather. It feels like a very well made case that will withstand constant usage and abuse while offering good protection for your iPad Mini.
