TGWK’s Review of “Lola’s Alphabet Train” v2.2 (iOS)

Lola’s Alphabet Train is an educational game from developer BeiZ. This game is strictly for children who are learning their ABC’s as well as those who are learning how to read. The main character of the game is Lola, a fun loving Panda bear with a train. The goal is to help Lola collect and deliver presents to her friends. You do so by solving word and letter puzzles. Each puzzle solved earns coins that you use to buy presents.

To start things off, I didn’t play Lola’s Alphabet Train at all. Instead, my four year old son played the game. Since this game is really for children, what better way to play test and review than to use an actual child in which this game was made for. All I did was observe.

My son was able to get through the entire game on his own and he seemed like he was having a ton of fun playing it. I think what helped were the colorful animations and friendly voice of the narrator. I think the reward system also helped a bit as questions that are answered correctly are rewarded with coins  that you use to buy presents. Including rewards usually always keeps kids interested. There are some nice little touches in the game that I thought were quite interesting. For instance, they would tell you to find the letter M, but the choices would show lower case letters instead of the upper case they showed. I thought this was a great way to help children recognize both the upper and lower case of letters.

The games featured in Lola’s Alphabet Train consist all of letter and word games. There are letter matching games, word recognition, fill in the blanks, and spelling games. The games are easy to play, but still offer a challenge for children. Like stated above, my son was able to play through all the games on his own, which is a huge plus because that means that the game was designed so that children could easily follow along and know what to do. I’m not really a fan of “children’s” games that require an adult present to explain how to play the game to them. If the game was made for kids, it should be easily played and understood by them. Lola’s Alphabet Train does this well with clear instructions and voice prompts that are very easy to understand.

On the technical side of Lola’s Alphabet Train, the graphics are very cute and colorful, perfect for children. Everything is presented quite large and all gameplay buttons and objects are large enough that it makes dragging or tapping easy for children. There is a nice circus like music that plays in the background, but it does not get in the way of the audio prompts which are clear and concise. I really do love the fact that all text is read out loud by the app as nothing is dumber than an app that is supposed to teach reading, but you have to read it in order to answer the questions.

All-in-all, Lola’s Alphabet Train is a great game for children. The activities are varied enough to keep children interested for quite a while and there are 3 levels of difficulty so that they can increase it as they get better. My son was playing it the entire first night I introduced the game to him, so that’s always a good sign in my opinion.
