Pirates vs Ninjas vs Zombies vs Pandas: Puzzle Wars is a brand new puzzle game from devlopers Pan Vision. This is their second game using the Pirates vs Ninjas vs Zombies vs Pandas theme so if you’ve played their first game, the characters in this one will be quite familiar. This game is very different from the first game however. Pirates vs Ninjas vs Zombies vs Pandas: Puzzle Wars is a match 4 puzzle game with a twist. The way you hold your device plays a large role in what goes on in the game.
The goal of Pirates vs Ninjas vs Zombies vs Pandas: Puzzle Wars is to destroy all the colored blocks on the playing area – the red, blue, green, and white blocks. You destroy blocks by matching 4 of the same faction type to an adjacent block of the same color. Each faction type has its own color, blue=ninjas, red=pirates, green=zombies, and white=pandas. If you’ve played Bejeweled before, then the basic gameplay mechanics will be very familiar. You swap pieces by tapping 2 adjacent pieces so they switch places to make a 4 color match. Where this game differs from Bejeweled however is that you can rotate the entire game 360 degrees. By doing so, you change the direction of gravity and the direction of which new blocks fall. This completely changes the game and allows you to be a bit more strategic. It’s a very nice addition that keeps the game from being a “me too” match 4 game.
There are 40 levels included in the game. They aren’t really that hard to finish but the real challenge here is to get the highest score, not how fast you can complete them. Time does however play a factor though as there is a “energy” bar that decreases over time that you must fill by making matches. If you take to long to make matches, the bar will decrease and the game will end. You always need to keep a constant eye on this meter while trying to achieve a high score as no matter how high your score is, having the meter run out on you before you’re done will nullify it.
The game itself is very solid and there isn’t anything I would really change about it. I would like to see Pan Vision add more level later on and hopefully they do. There were a couple of bugs I ran into but those can be fixed and don’t really affect the overall game. What’s great about iOS games are that bugs can always be fixed with an update. I’d also like to see some other game modes or themed modes that would make you have to complete specific challenges to complete the level. This would give the game a bit more value and replayability.
Pirates vs Ninjas vs Zombies vs Pandas: Puzzle Wars is a solid, match 4 puzzle game that fans of this genre should not pass up. Unlike other match 4 games that only feature gravity going in the downward direction, Pirates vs Ninjas vs Zombies vs Pandas: Puzzle Wars lets you rotate your device 360 degrees, allowing for 4 directions of gravity. This adds a whole new element to the match 4 puzzle game. With 41 levels, the game will keep you busy for quite some time since you’ll want to try and get the highest score possible on each. Pirates vs Ninjas vs Zombies vs Pandas: Puzzle Wars features OpenFeint and Game Center connectivity so the competitive side in you will want to beat all your friends on the leaderboard.
