TGWK’s Review of “FX Photo Studio HD” v3.1.0 (iPad)

FX Photo Studio HD is an advanced photo processing app from develop Macphun. What it does is it allows you to manipulate your photos with a variety of different filters and photo effects, 181 of them to be exact. This is probably the most I have every seen in any one app before. What makes FX Photo Studio HD different too is that not only can you apply any one of the effects to your photo, you can apply multiple effects to any given photo thus making the possibilities almost limitless.

FX Photo Studio HD lets you load up images from either your photo album or your documents folder. The documents folder allows you to sync images by dragging them into iTunes, but the easiest method is through the photo album. The iPad version of this app does lack one thing that the iPhone version has and that is the ability to use the iPad2’s cameras to take pictures to use in the app. Hopefully this will be in the next update now that the iPad does have cameras. Also, unlike the iPhone version, the iPad version has a much cleaner layout with everything all on screen at the same time.

What is also great about the iPad version is that it allows you to see what each filter will do to your image in realtime. I tested this on an iPad2 and rendering each filter was super fast, almost instantaneous. I’m not sure what it would be like on the first gen iPad however. This is quite useful, especially when you have to go browsing through 181 different filters. Now, if you don’t want to go searching through all 181 filters each time you use this app, you can save the ones you use the most as favorites. There is a separate favorites tab so you can get to the ones you use the most, quickly. It is also possible to hide the filters that you don’t like and will never use.

Besides filters, FX Photo Studio HD is also a capable basic editor that allows you to crop, rotate, and resize your photos. Edited photos can then be saved as a new file in your photo album, documents folder, or clipboard. It even has the ability to share your finished photo via Twitter, Flickr, Tumbler, Facebook, or email. It is also possible to print your photo directly through the app, although I was not able to test out this feature. For such an inexpensive app, it really does a lot.

There really isn’t much not to like about FX Photo Studio HD. It has almost every filter you can think of with the ability to adjust the settings for each. The only thing missing is the ability to take images from the camera which I stated earlier in the review. Other that that, this app is near perfect. I’ve heard that the FX PHoto Studio HD will be updated soon with new features so I’m eager to see what more they can add this already full featured app.

FX Photo Studio HD is available now in the App Store for $4.99. It is compatible with iPad. Requires iOS 3.2 or later.
