TGWK’s Review – Bruce v1.02.018 (iOS)

Bruce is a platform game from developer Fervent Interactive. Unlike the more traditional  left to right platform games, Bruce is played from top to bottom. This means that for most of the entire game, you’ll be free falling. Bruce actually has more in common with those endless jumping games than a platform game. In the game, you play as Bruce, a fearless, free falling turtle that loves cabbages. Navigate the the vertical world and collect as many cabbages as you can before time runs out.

Like I said above, this is a free falling platform game. Bruce will start off in a free fall and must collect cabbages that go towards his score. There is a time limit set for you to gain as much points as you can. Most games will last about 1:30 but you can collect clocks during the game that will extend the time limit. What is very appealing about Bruce is that the levels will randomly change each day. This really extends the longevity of the game as it means you won’t be playing the same level layout over and over again.

Controls are easy to master. You can sue the default tilt controls or go into the settings and switch to touch arrows if you more comfortable pressing buttons. Either way, you only need to know how to move Bruce left or right as he will automatically free fall downwards.

Bruce is actually a very fun game. It’s actually not the type of game I would have normally checked out upon first glance but after playing it, I’m glad I did. It’s very casual in nature and something that most people will be able to just pick up and play. The tutorial at the beginning of the game helps too and it’s always a welcome addition when developers include one. Bruce can be played by players of all ages including little ones so it’s a great family game to pick up if you’re looking for something your kids can play.

Bruce is available now in the App Store for $$0.99. It is a universal app and is compatible with iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad. Requires iOS 4.2 or later.
