Beach Whale is a side scrolling action game from indie dev, Dingle. I’m not really sure if there is a story behind this game or not. All I know is that you play a whale that like surfing the edge of beaches. Collect fish and avoid dangerous sea creatures in order to reach the end of each level. On some levels, you’ll even be able to fight huge bosses and show them who rules the oceans.
One of the first things you’ll notice about Beach Whale is that the graphics are not what I would call awesome. They look like they were hand drawn by children, but they aren’t bad per se. They are decent enough where kids will still enjoy the game and be able to understand what is going on. once you get past the graphics, you’ll find that Beach Whale has a lot to offer in terms of gameplay.
Beach Whale uses simple tilt and tap mechanics. You tilt your device left or right to move your whale up and down and you tap on the left side of the screen to flap your tail around. Tap the right side, and it can lash out a tongue that grabs far away items. Most of the gameplay consists of your avoiding enemies, grabbing fish to eat, and trying not to get yourself beached. Use the waves from the ocean to speed you up but watch out for rocks that will also block your path.
Now there are a few tiny issues with the gameplay that annoyed me a bit. First off, there are items that appear in the foreground that completely block your view. You can not see what is behind them and more often times than not, I end up getting eating something I shouldn’t because I couldn’t see it. This of course slows you down and can cause you to die. Another issue is that at least for me, the game can seem a bit slow. By slow, I mean the pacing of the game. I almost want the game to be a bit faster paced.
Beach Whale is a pretty decent game. There are tons to do and you can collect fish to buy upgrades that help make your whale stronger and faster. It’s also very easy to amass a ton of fish so you won’t have to grind out the game for hours trying to upgrade. If you can look past the art style, you’ll find a a very complete game that can be very challenging, but not too challenging where kids will get frustrated. If they can clean up some of the issues I stated above, it would be even better, but it’s still fun for kids.
