There have been a few Cotton games released on the Nintendo Switch. One of the latest is Panorama Cotton, a game that was originally released in 1994 for the SEGA Mega Drive. Panorama Cotton is the third game in the series and is actually a huge departure for the series. We’ll get more into that in a bit. The story in Panorama Cotton is as follows: when burnt willow suddenly appears in the Queen’s garden, the behavior of her highness begins to get stranger and stranger. Cotton and Silk go on a journey to find the evil willow burner and bring an end to the disaster. 

Panorama Cotton is another one of those perfect ports with some improvements. If you want to play the game exactly as it was presented in 1994, then you’ll want to play the Challenge mode. Here, everything is as it was. If you play the regular mode, you’ll be able to play with the addition of save states, a new rewind option, and cheats. These just enhance the game a bit and make it bit less difficult to complete.

Graphically, the game still looks pretty decent despite the game being over 25 years old. The art is still just as bright and colorful and the levels and enemies all retain their classic look. In terms of look, nothing has changed. I am a little disappointed that the black borders weren’t filled in with some kind of graphic or overlay, but at least it’s not as bad here as it is in Cotton 100%.

It’s the gameplay where Panorama Cotton really changes from its previous games. Instead of being a side-scrolling shooter, this game plays more in line with something like Space Harrier. Instead of side to side, you’re moving into the screen and can move all around it on a flat plane. Enemies come at you and you shoot into the screen. The rest though is classic Cotton. There are colored crystals you can collect to level up your attacks as well as a super charged power attack that you can only use when your magic meter is filled up.

So that’s basically it with Panorama Cotton. It’s a pretty good game that really takes you back to the 90’s. I like the fact that they tried to do something different here that over the previous two Cotton games, even though some might be turned off by its non-traditional nature. If you’re a Cotton fan and want to relive the past, this is definitely the game for you.
