Cotton 100% | Nintendo Switch Review

Cotton 100%

The Cotton series in seeing its 30th Anniversary this year and as a result, a bunch of classic Cotton games have been released. Some see remastered editions while others are just straight ports. Cotton 100% is of the latter and is basically a port of the original 90’s era game. In Cotton 100%, Cotton and Silk are off to save the world again while also satisfying her appetite for Willow candy.

Cotton 100% is the second game in the franchise. Graphically, the game still looks pretty decent despite the game being over 25 years old. The art is still just as bright and colorful and the levels and enemies all retain their classic look. In terms of look, nothing has changed and it even retains its original 3:4 aspect ration. I am a little disappointed that the black borders weren’t filled in with some kind of graphic or overlay, however.

The audio and soundtrack have also been 100% ported and are also original. It’s very nostalgic and does definitely takes you back to the 90’s when side-scrolling shooters were very popular.

Other than that, the gameplay is typical 90’s shooter. Attacks can be leveled up by collecting different colored crystals and you have three types of attacks. You have a normal attack, a ground attack, and a super charged power attack that you can only use when your magic meter is filled up. You can even collect fairies that follow you around and also attack enemies for you.

What is different though is the inclusion of a rewind feature. If you happen to mess up, you can rewind and redo that portion again. Not only that, Cotton 100% now also includes save states so you can save you game at any point and reload it as much as you want. There’s also the addition of a new Challenge Mode, which is bascially just the original game without the use of save states, rewind, or cheats. Cheats by the way can be unlocked by completing challenge Mode.

Cotton 100%

So that’s pretty much it. Cotton 100% isn’t really an incredibly deep game, but it’s a fun little game that takes you back to the 90’s. If you’re a Cotton fan and want to relive the past, this is definitely the game for you. They didn’t mess with any of the good stuff and what they added only enhances the experience.

Cotton 100% is available now on the Nintendo eShop.
