Monkey Preschool Lunchbox by THUP Games is something I happened upon accidentally. I never really browse the educational games section on the App Store but since my child frequently uses the iPhone now to play games, I figured I should at least download a few that are for his age range and are at least educational and not just mindless gaming. That is when I came upon this game. The main reason I checked this game out was because it had a monkey on it. Most games with monkeys in them are usually pretty fun, although I probably just equating monkey to SEGA’s Super Monkeyball game. Monkey Preschool Lunchbox claims to be “The #1 preschool game in the app store.” Now, I don’t know if these claim are true or not but what really caught my attention was the rest of the description.
“Learn and have fun by helping monkeys pack lunch! Monkey Preschool Lunchbox is a collection of six exciting educational games for your preschooler (ages 2 to 5)”
Continue reading the rest of the review after the page break.
There are 6 games included with Monkey Preschool Lunchbox and they are as follows:
1. COLORS. This picky monkey only likes fruit of a certain color, touch only the color they like to pack the lunchbox. Teaches colors, color names, and grouping.
2. MATCHING. Match pairs of fruit hidden behind the cards to pack lunch for this monkey.
3. COUNTING. Count off the fruit the monkey is looking for to fill up the lunchbox. Teaches numbers and counting.
4. LETTERS. This monkey only wants fruit that starts with a certain letter, pick the fruit that starts with that letter. Teaches letters and letter sounds.
5. PUZZLE. This monkey’s fruit broke into pieces! How odd! Put it back together for them. Teaches shapes and pattern recognition.
6. SPOT THE DIFFERENCE. (NEW in 1.1!) Help the monkey spot the fruit that looks different, or is a different size. Teaches patterns, bigger, and smaller.
Now, for an adult, these games are super easy and simplistic, however I decided to let me kid have first crack at the game and see what his reactions were to it. I mean, the game is meant for his age group so who better to have the first go at it than him?
For starters, he was super excited that there was a new game that he could play on the iPhone. He really loves animals so seeing an icon with a monkey on it made him more excited. Upon starting the game, he was greeted by some really fun music. The game only has 1 button on the menu screen which made it super simple for him to get right into the game without having to ask me what the buttons are for.
As soon as he presses the PLAY button, it goes directly into one of the six games that are included. Each type of game is fairly easy since it is for ages 2-5 year olds and the images are very simple and large. Nothing on screen detracts from the main objective of each game so the child can concentrate on what the game is trying to teach them. Monkey Preschool Lunchbox uses very recognizable objects that most children should already know. My child already knew most of these concepts so he sped through many of the games. For the record, he’s 4 now and has already been attending preschool. However, even though he already knew most of these concepts, he still continued to play it as it held his attention for a good solid 45 minutes which is a long time for a child.
Everything about the game is toddler friendly. The graphics, the funny sound effects, the very large game play elements make this a very simple game that they can pick up very quickly. Monkey Preschool Lunchbox is very educational and teaches the basics of color recognition, recognizing letters, memory improvement and critical thinking.
The game is very good for $0.99. Even though it only has 6 games that are very simple, they do not repeat and continuously cycle. The games are very fun for children and are easy for them to learn. I would have liked to see a lesson on basic shape recognition but hopefully it will get added in a future update. In fact, I hope THUP continues to update this game with more features as this is a fantastic children’s game.
