Review: “Dragon Fire: Una’s Quest” v1.0 (iOS)

Dragon Fire: Una’s Quest from developer Debug Design follows the story of a young dragon (Una) who must fight her way through the various lands of Krytok defeating hordes of enemies to reach and defeat the evil Queen Hydra!

Dragon Fire: Una’s Quest is a retro styled, top down action shooter that features colorful graphics and unique enemies. Players have the chance collect power-ups in order to change Una into multi-headed versions of herself – each with their own unique firing patterns. Along the way, you’ll also be collecting stars to upon up 3 bonus mini-games which are also included.

The first thing you’ll notice about Dragon Fire: Una’s Quest is the graphic style used for the game. It is very bright and colorful and very cartoon-like. By cartoon-like, I mean geared more towards the younger crowd as enemies are not menacing at all and consist of things like pigs, sheep, penguins, weird flying hydra looking things, and more. It does feel like Dragon Fire: Una’s Quest was designed to be more appealing towards children because none of the enemies seem that frightful at all, not even the boss characters. They just seem “cute.”

Next up are the sounds. The soundtrack for Dragon Fire: Una’s Quest is fantastic. It is very retro in nature and has that old school Legend of Zelda feel to it. The sound effects however are pretty generic sounding and are pretty underwhelming considering how good the soundtrack is.

On the control side of things, Dragon Fire: Una’s Quest includes 2 separate control schemes. The d-pad style is the better of the two as it allows for more accuracy. The joystick style is just plain weird and makes no sense. There is no visible representation of the joystick on the screen so you are left guessing where the center is. Ever time you think you’ve found where the center is, it moves. You see, it seems like the center is where ever you first place your finger before you start sliding it around, but it never seems to do what you want it to do. Another problem I find with the controls is that Una’s fire that she shoots from her mouth never seems to fire fast enough. It is just too slow and often times, it just takes too long to destroy an enemy because of this. I really wish there was a separate firing button as I can tap the screen faster than this thing shoots automatically.

Final Thoughts

Dragon Fire: Una’s Quest is a decent top down shooter that is suitable for all ages thanks in part to its cartoon styled graphics that lean towards the “cute” side of the scale. It has a terrific soundtrack but the sound effects could use some improvement. The controls are also kind of iffy and I almost would like to see them implement another control scheme that uses the iPhones tilt functions instead to control Una. On that note, I’d like to see improvements in these areas for the next update as this is a pretty good, all-around game that even children can play.

Dragon Fire: Una’s Quest is available in the App Store now for 99 cents for all iPhone and iPod Touch.
