TGWK’s Review – Obento! v1.1 (iOS)

Obento! is a fun, lighthearted app from developers Black Sheep Design and Springs & Struts. The app imitates that of a Japanese Bento box. Everytime you open the app up, you are presented with a brand new Bento box filled with yummy food. Like real Japanese Bento boxes, these are always filled with food that are decorated in such a way that they are almost too cute and lovely to eat.

The app just shows you an uplifting message when you first open it and then when you touch the box, it reveals a tasty looking display of food decorated in such a way that it can only make you smile. Again, it has the feeling of a real Japanese Bento box and I love the fact that you can tap on each item and read a description about it if you are not familiar with what it is. The art style is very good and well suited for this app.

Obento! is a very simple “toy” for you iPhone. It’s not a game or an app, and it doesn’t really do much of anything except show you a random Bento box upon opening the app each time, but it’s cute. It’s one of those apps that kind of just makes you feel good every time you open it as it’s like giving yourself a little treat each time.

Obento! is available now in the App Store for free. It is compatible with iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad. Requires iOS 3.0 or later.

Obento is a toy for people who love sushi and the art of the Japanese bento (lunchbox).

Get a random assortment of adorable sushi every time you launch the app, and tap to find out more about the name, history and presentation of each food in the box.
