TGWK’s Review – Paint My Wings v1.0 (iOS)

Paint My Wings is an educational children’s app form developer Toca Boca. We reviewed one of their other games here a few weeks back named Toca Doctor and found it to be a really unique and fun children’s game. Toca Boca takes that same creative formula and applies it to Paint My Wings. The app allows children to explore their more creative side where they’ll be able to design the wings of a butterfly. Using a variety of different colors, they’ll be able to design anything their imagination can conjure up.

Children will be able to design either a male or female butterfly. They’ll start off with blank white wings that must be colored with a wide range of colors. The developer uses fruits to symbolize colors, which is a nice touch, giving it a more natural feel. What I like about the process of designing the wings is that the left and right wings are mirrored. You can paint on either the left or right side and it’ll show up mirrored on the opposite wing.

Another nice touch is that these aren’t just motionless butterflies. The butterflies are full of life and will talk to you as you paint and will also tell you the name of the color you choose. They even move around a bit like real creatures and you can even interact with them by tickling them to make them laugh. It adds a friendliness to them that will really help draw children into the app.

When your children finish their creations, they can take a picture of them and save it to your photo album. This allows them to share it later with their family and friends.

Paint My Wings is the type of app I really enjoy giving my kids to explore. I love apps that encourage children to use their imaginations to create something wonderful and Paint My Wings really hits the mark. The underlying app is just a simple drawing pad, but by forcing the theme of creating butterfly wings on it, it helps children stay focused on a specific task. This helps children focus all their creativity on just one thing instead of wandering all over the place. I also like the fact that because children have to use their imaginations, you can almost guarantee that there will be an endless number of creations they can come up with, with no two ever being the same.

Paint My Wings is available now in the App Store for $0.99. It is a universal app and is compatible with iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad. Requires iOS 3.2 or later.
